If I remember correctly I got a copy of Anthems and Nile "Catacombs of Nephren Ka" for Christmas because only mom-bought metal is real. Loved this record so much that I bought the Nightside Eclipse shirt from the Rockabilia catalog. I stopped listening to everything past the first couple of tracks after I picked up Nightside and realized it was way better.
XI Equilibrium got maybe 1 or 2 full plays from me, and then hibernated at the bottom of a lazerline CD rack until I sold it for rent money upon moving out of my parents house 6 years later.
If I'm not mistaken, I remember this album being the best selling black metal album in the US until dimmu got big. I remember buying Anthems back in the day and not liking it because of the wall of sound. It took me a good few years to get into it.
got this album in 98 from Record Town and it changed my life. I used to listen to it on repeat while playing Rollercoaster Tycoon. I don't compare each album to the others, they are all unique and stellar in their own ways, yes including IX Equilibrium and Prometheus.
also, long live the trumpets. I set up my old computer from high school so that anytime you opened the start menu that played haha.
