I go there all the time. It depends on which one you go to (I go to both regularly). Charles Street is the original one and seems to be better overall though it is smaller than the Kirkland Street one. In general, the butchers there aren't the most knowledgeable or the most courteous of people but they get the job done. Savenor's is especially great if you want to do a special orders. A few friends and myself ordered a 13lb piglet for an amazing roast. They also have a few "exotic" meats.

All in all, they're probably the number 1 butcher in the Boston area but that's not saying much, honestly. I find the Charles Street location is better.

Awesome, that's good enough for right now at least. I wish they had the type of butchers that would talk to you and teach you something, etc. etc. but just getting the job done well is more than most places around here.

I'm thinking of picking up a few varieties of bacon, the 'sweet wild boar' bacon sounds amazing. I love gamey flavors as well as bacon. Combining the two seems to be a grand maneuver.

Prices are definitely comparable to Whole Foods. Quality is equivalent at both but Savenor's has a wider variety. Both places cut way too much fat off their meat.

trim son, it's what you're eating in your burger.

There's one butcher at the Kirkland store that is really nice. It's too bad he works at the shittier location.

Savenor's stopped selling Niman Ranch bacon which is the best fucking bacon you can buy in a store. Formaggio Kitchen has it though.

Can you request that the butcher doesn't do this? Could I go in and ask for frenched lamb-chops with a fair amount of fat, and they would do something like that?

My 85%? Fuck that dude. I want 85% fat.

Ya but it has to be an untouched piece of meat. It's also cheaper that way at Savenor's. Same price at Whole Foods.

There is also a good place in Newton called John Dewar & Co Inc which is a little less pricey and I found to be just as good (excellent variety too). Tasso ham? YES PLZ. Lots of kurobuta(L?) pork and higher end beef options (MMM...Kobe).

Otherwise, closest to Boston: Wholefoods (can only vouch for Fresh Pond and River St. locations) and Savenors are your best bets.

If you are looking for deli meats and cheese, Formaggio Kitchen and A. Russo's and Sons cannot be beat.
