Not sure what the motivation was to go back and re-record these particular songs. Thoughts?

Maybe in Europe. I doubt the album will sell anywhere else.

I really dug the re-recorded versions of The Castaway, Black Winter Day and Vulgar Necrolatry.

The whole thing is an interesting listen. Granted, not every song sounds increible with the new production, but I'm glad they did this. It is a good listen.

This + I still prefer the guitar tone on Tales from the Thousand Lakes.

Agreed. Also, I think the vocal tone seems a little too 'brutal' over the more melodic stuff

Also, credit to the fact that they stuck with tradition and didn't reinterpret the songs to reflect their current musical stylings.

Rerecording one of my all time favorite albums (tales) im not I like this. Its "good" but it feels like a really good cover band sometimes.

Although hearing Tomi Koivusaari do vocals again on "Drowned Maid" rules.
