heres one in your EYE?

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...e=4&u=/nm/20040407/od_nm/odd_eye_dc

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Body piercing and tattoos make way. The latest fashion trend to hit the Netherlands is eyeball jewelry.

Dutch eye surgeons have implanted tiny pieces of jewelry called "JewelEye" in the mucous membrane of the eyes of six women and one man in cosmetic surgery pioneered by an ophthalmic surgery research and development institute in Rotterdam.

The procedure involves inserting a 3.5 mm (0.13 inch) wide 1 piece of specially developed jewelry -- the range includes a glittering half-moon or heart -- into the eye's mucous membrane under local anaesthetic at a cost of 500 to 1,000 euros ($1,232).

"In my view it is a little more subtle than (body) piercing. It is a bit of a fun thing and a very personal thing for people," said Gerrit Melles, director of the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery (www.NIIOC.nl).

The piece of jewelry is inserted in the conjunctiva -- the mucous membrane lining the inner surface of the eyelids and front of the eyeball -- in sterile conditions using an operating microscope in a procedure taking about 15 minutes.

"Without doing any harm to the eye we can implant a jewel in the conjunctiva," Melles said. "So far we have not seen any side effects or complications and we don't expect any in the future."

The Rotterdam-based institute, which develops new ocular surgical techniques in corneal, cataract and retinal surgery, developed and patented the jewelry made with special materials and the surgical procedure.

The institute, which carries out the procedure in cooperation with an eye clinic near the city of Utrecht, said it has a waiting list for people who wanted the implant.

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at Apr 8,2004 12:00pm

I learned about this in school today. People are retarded.

transdermal and subdermal implants cause tissue and bone damage over years. id give this a year at the most before eye probleme will occur.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Apr 8,2004 3:45pm
I'd add this to my list of phobias.
anonymous's is mostlikely correct there.

it's like wearing hard contacts for a long time... some people develop scar tissue in their eyes... so the same thing's gotta go for this. i'd rather stick to those funky tooth gems... getting food stuck in your tooth jewelry is way better then having a fucked up eye ball.

I'm with you on that one.

toggletoggle post by Abbath at Apr 8,2004 6:36pm
people just have to stop fucking with their bodies it's getting insane

toggletoggle post by MaliceInLeatherland   at Apr 8,2004 6:49pm
it's like that fugazi song about not being what you own. People seem to love defining themselves based on their possessions. What a crock.

i have a bar in my neck. i love "fucking with my body"
but this is just stupid. its not like anybody could ever see it anyway.

toggletoggle post by MyDeadDoll   at Apr 9,2004 1:49am
i wanted to get two barbells in the back of my neck, but i'd be afraid of tugging them or something. it's a sexy look.

toggletoggle post by MyDeadDoll   at Apr 9,2004 1:50am
what i really want to do is a surface piercing on my arm. since i've got an angel on my shoulder, i wanna put a little barbell through the tip of her wing. or if i ever get the "evil" angel on the other shoulder, i would do a surface CBR for the halo

oooh! it's in the front! nice. does it ever bother you?

toggletoggle post by eeyorge at Apr 9,2004 3:19am
no not really. i got it caught on my sweatshirt once when taking it off and the ball popped off. luckily i was at band pratice and my drummer is a piercer and did it for me, so i just went back and he put the ball back on. otherwise its not even noticable, unless you feel it.

toggletoggle post by MyDeadDoll   at Apr 9,2004 3:37am
did it hurt to get done?

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Apr 9,2004 4:50am
i touched it

toggletoggle post by eeeyorge at Apr 9,2004 6:43am
sure.
but i mean it's a piercing, they always hurt. its not like i was expecting it to tickle. it wasn't bad or anything, the clamp hurt more than the needle.
it hurt less than my two lip rings, but more than my labret. pain is relative to your mental state though.
