Looking to get some art done. This will actually be my first tattoo. I have no clue what I should be expecting for prices and I have no clue where the good artists and or shops are.

Anyone care to share some knowledge in this department? Thanks!

I've gotten all my work done by Nick Flanagan @ Dragon's Lair in Salem, NH. He does a lot of traditional stuff, but has also covered my leg with amazing color portraits from the Evil Dead Trilogy. He is currently zombifying my right arm and it's sick as fuck so far.

Nick is fast as hell and an awesome dude. Shop rates are $125 an hour, but if you're lucky the bossman won't be there and you could potentially get a deal, not guaranteed though.

man tattoos are expensive. they can make more in one day than i can in a 40 hour week.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Aug 14,2009 4:25pm
I'm probably going to get the outline done then the coloring/shading done a couple weeks afterwards.

Jonzig.

Depending on how big it is, that's all you want to do in the first sitting anyway.

I am using Anchor Steam in Newport.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Aug 14,2009 4:50pm
Can you guys throw some prices out there? What would be the damage for a half-sleeve at these places you are recommending?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Aug 14,2009 4:54pm
I think you should wait til you are cleaner.

I second Nick at Dragon's Lair. Swell fella and solid tattooist.

Just sent a friend of mine to Nick at Dragon's Lair. Also, the owner of Tattoomb is pretty good. It's in nashua.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Aug 14,2009 5:13pm
And again fellas, what price am i looking at for a half-sleeve at these shops you are recommending?

toggletoggle post by AUTOPSY_666   at Aug 14,2009 5:30pm
I wonder if that Tattoomb guy would trade some brand new CDs against some ink time???

I wanna do my left sleeve that way, barter is better.

toggletoggle post by AUTOPSY_666   at Aug 14,2009 5:32pm edited Aug 14,2009 5:35pm
Anchor Steam is $125 an hour and worth every penny.

My MALEVOLENT ink:

The owner is a cool chick too, better to have her touching you for all those hours.

Regeneration Tattoo in Allston.
This is my arm. Dan Bythewood was the artist.

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Aug 14,2009 5:35pm
I'm about 7 hours deep into my sleeve and it's cost $800 or so, but it's about 2/3 done, so a half sleeve from Nick Flanagan could be only $600. But, it really all depends on how complex the work is. Best bet is to message some artists on MySpace or call them if you can find shop numbers on Google or whatever to get quotes.

More from Jen Clinch Guertin of Anchor Steam:

Wow!

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Aug 14,2009 5:42pm
That chicken means fucking business.

toggletoggle post by AUTOPSY_666   at Aug 14,2009 5:46pm
My 21 hours cost about $2700.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Aug 14,2009 5:55pm
fuck this is going to be expensive which is why i'm going with a half-sleeve to start.

anchor steam definitely does some good work.

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Aug 14,2009 6:04pm
Good work ain't cheap.

Look into Ben Pease at Pino Bros in Cambridge. Dude is ridiculous.

toggletoggle post by AUTOPSY_666   at Aug 14,2009 6:05pm
It'll be there til death, invest in it, you really do get what you pay for.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Aug 14,2009 6:08pm
This is going to sound like a ridiculous question but realize I've never been inked before. What does it feel like? I know it will hurt or at least be uncomfortable but can you describe the feeling?

toggletoggle post by Blue  at Aug 14,2009 6:10pm
it feels like thousands of bunny rabbits gently gnawing away at your skin with razor sharp teeth.

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Aug 14,2009 6:13pm
The pain is different for everyone. I've heard shins are painful as fuck but my shin was seriously the only place I've been tattooed that didn't hurt. Parts of the wrist, elbow, knees, inside of your bicep and collarbone amongst other bony areas suck. It kinda feels like a cat scratching a sunburn.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Aug 14,2009 6:16pm
Haha, sorry dude. No pain no gain. If you can deal with pain well, you can deal with the small sacrifice to have awesome shit on you for the rest of your life.

toggletoggle post by MadOakDevin  at Aug 14,2009 6:17pm
It feels like someone is cutting you with something really sharp. You don't feel much until a second or so after, in my opinion. The first 4 hours are easy to deal with. After the 4th hour, you are just sitting there wishing the fuckin' thing was done.

outline work is tender a bit the next day, but will also start healing, so it the same day will start to get itchy. the shading work will be tender for a couple days.

toggletoggle post by MadOakDevin  at Aug 14,2009 6:19pm
im getting the inside of my bicep done on halloween. some of my tattoo hits that spot already, so i'm not looking forward to it at all.

toggletoggle post by MadOakDevin  at Aug 14,2009 6:19pm
i totally forgot about it feeling like a sunburn for a couple of days. that's true.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Aug 14,2009 6:26pm
I can handle pain for the most part.

im just saying an option to death like this on your skin canvas should probably be a hard decision made when you arent dope sick

Id suggest Precision Body Arts in Nashua NH. I got a large octopus on my arm for 300 there. I've gotten many compliments and its by far the best I've gotten. Nick Kelly is really good I hear, but Angry Al did mine. At the time they were offering a whole day of tattooing for 350. Obviously you wouldn't be getting worked on the whole time but if you're looking to get a big chunk done in a day it seems like a sweet deal. Ill post a pic of mine if you want. They also do scarification and awesome piercings.

Renaissance in Woonsocket RI or just get your little brother to do it. SRSLY.

Hobos in Porstmouth ask for Jay Scott. Dan at Regen in Allston. Kelly and Rubin at Chameleon in Cambridge. Just make sure you have a good design ready. It's more fun for the tat artist and will make sure you get a good tat.

Ray of Tattomb (nashua NH)plus, you just listen to
black and death metal the entire time getting your skin inked. Got most of sleeve complete from him alone, and the cost has been 600$+trade time for recrording his band.

Well I'm not an artist so I won't have a "design" ready. I do have a good idea of what I would want in the sleeve though. Don't most tattoo shops just ask you what you want included and then they draw up the sketches? Thats how I would want ti done. Gives the artist plenty of freedom to work his/her magic.

toggletoggle post by DJ DEATH at Aug 16,2009 4:40pm
Dwyer, i dont think he would trade cds for ink work... Unless you somehow help out his band?? I dont really know, you should contact him!

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Aug 16,2009 6:26pm edited Aug 16,2009 6:28pm
Just as long as you have a good idea of what you want as well as some references (e.g. photos, art or other tattoos that may convey your general idea) the artist should be able to create a design that works.
