yeah thats one of the songs that bored the shit outta me
You're right. I LOVE prog like no one else, and I really can't stand AAL. I loved the new Periphery, Tesseract, and Merrow, so it's not that I don't like that style of music, it's just that AAL come off as incredibly dull to me. And everything about TA's style, dress, and playing screams gimmicky to me. I don't see anything unique about his playing, except the extra 2 strings. A lot of stuff Bulb and Tesseract have been doing for nearly 10 years. Which is fine - I mean I've been rehashing the same shit for 20 years myself, but he gets a lot of acclaim as groundbreaking or amazing. I don't see it.
Now for 8-strings, this guy recently made me lose my shit. Good sense of melody, and still quite a shredder. More in the gilbert vein than AAL, even though it's an 8 string.

I would never call AAL groundbreaking. They're just good prog and have good memorable songs(at least imo). This Gianluca Ferro guy is pretty fucking shweet too.
Oh, I wasn't referring to you. More the SS.org "TA is GOD" crowd.

In a tangent from Paul Gilbert -
His old pal in Japan Marty Friedman-san is flying back to L.A., removing ALL his guitars from the Megadeth era from storage, and auctioning them off. All proceeds will go to aid in Japan.
I've always hated Marty, but that is some stand-up shit there.
