New site? Maybe some day.
|
The best part about this movie is that Nicholas Cage was originally cast for the lead, but was then replaced by the immortal Mickey fucking Rourke. |
|
I'd also like to add that Aronofsky is king, and I totally forgot that Marissa Tomei was in this. It will undoubtedly lead to at least 3 or 4 months before, and after the release of me annoying my girlfriend with the George Costanza voice yelling "MARRISSA TOMEI!!" |
|
Yeah, this looks awesome. He got all jacked and has sexual long hair for this role... |
|
i heard that Roddy Piper cried when he saw this |
|
this does look like a really good movie |
|
the reviews have been very good. |
|
I was gonna go see this at the theater in New Haven tonight but was randomly given a DVD screener earlier in the day. Fucking great movie. Marisa Tomei's ass is GOLD. She totally made me fat in the pants. Highly recommended. |
|
probably seeing it this weekend. Psyched.
Rourke is one my faves.
You guys have seen Angel Heart and Barfly, I hope! |
|
Saw it a few weeks ago... definitely worth the trip. Fantastic movie, awesome story... and as a huge wrestling fan this isn't corny at all. Rourke NAILS the role. |
|
Saw this and enjoyed it. Mickey Rourke is one of my favorite actor's and he gave another strong performance. I found the story to be both humorous and somber.
Angel Heart and Barfly are both backed as great films. Falling Angel was also a cool book. |
|
Great movie. Tomeis ass and tits were def the star of the movie. |
|
|
i heard that Roddy Piper cried when he saw this |
I heard that you cried when you read that. |
|
i really want to see this. |

WHO TOLD YOU?!
I WILL FIGHT HIM! |
|
haha, seriously though, i just saw this on saturday...it was great, i would reccomend it to anyone....wrestling fan or not.... it's just an excellent movie, plus ya get to see Marissa Tomei naked (who looks alot better naked than i thought she would).
and, if you are a wrestling fan, the matches in the flick are really well scripted, it's pretty damn cool. |

|
this looks really good...and I'm a sucker for old school wrasslin' |
|
first movie in a very long time that I have heard literally no bad things about...def want to see this |
|
yeah, isn't it directed by darren aronofsky? i need to see this and gran torino |
|
This movie was absolutely amazing. Rourke delivers one of the most complete and moving character portrayals I have ever seen. He deserves an Oscar for his role. |
|
he got a golden globe.
but i agree....he deserves an oscar |
|
I saw this over the weekend...really good and Rourke
was brilliant as a famous wrestler coming to the end
of his career. Sad and poignant...
Also watched Gran Torino which was great too. Classic Eastwood...
some amazingly funny as fuck one liners from the original tough guy. |

This film is incredible. The fact that Rourke didn't win every oscar possible, plus all of next year's oscars is a complete injustice. I'm still hearing rumors that Nicholas Cage was originally cast to play the lead in this, and I think it would have robbed the world of an amazing work that only Mickey Rourke could have done justice to.
POSSIBLE SPOILERS COMING UP...
Aronofsky is the man too. This was a really visceral film in a lot of ways, not just with the mayhem going on inside the ring, but with the more subtle scenes that showed the pain and discomfort he went through in his daily life.
There were a couple things I could have done without. #1. The scene with him and his daughter on the wharf. Their relationship was necessary for his character, I get it. But that scene just didn't fit in the film. It was too bright, and used too many wide shots. It went from an Aronofsky film to Sleepless in Seattle for that whole scene, and I just didn't appreciate it.
#2. I didn't like that they added the applause and cheering tracks to the scene where he was getting ready to go out to the deli counter. I think it was more than enough to keep it subtle, and to shoot it the same way they shot his wrestling entrance scenes. I'm not an idiot, I get the point they're trying to make. Aronofsky, traditionally rarely uses non-diagetic sound like that, and I think it was kind of overkill for that scene.
Other than those 2 minor things I can't think of anything I'd change about this film. |
|
i saw this last night. it more than lived up to the hype. an oscar wouldn't do rourke justice. his performance goes beyond an oscar. nicolas cage would've ruined this movie. |
|
been trying to find a torrent for this because I don't really like movie theaters |

i agree. i thought the sounds of the machines humming and whirring in the back of the store hinted enough at being crowd noise, so the actual crowd noise wasn't necessary. the machine sounds, combined with the way the scene was shot with him walking toward the curtains, did enough to mimic a wrestling entrance. |

I think I see what you mean stylistically regarding that beach scene with his daughter, but I think that the symbolism there was that the light and openness and relative happiness of that scene was meant to contrast with his normally very depressing, constricted lifestyle. I also thought that the conversation he had with his daughter was one of the strongest moments of his acting in the entire film. |

that was one of my favorite scenes in the movie, but i agree about the way it was shot. the cinematography in that scene was more polished and typical, while the rest of the movie was grittier and more low-end. |

i haven't cried at a movie in a long time, but that scene made tears come out. maybe it's because i have a daughter and i never want to see my life come to that someday. i don't know if i've ever sympathized that much with a movie character before. |

FAG!!!
nah, I'm kidding. That movie messed me up some. |
|
i was originally going to say the movie made me cry like a fag or cry like a bitch, but i figured i'd just leave it open for someone to say FIGHT THE TEARS OR YOU ARE A PUSSY or something like that. or maybe just YOU ARE A PUSSY. |

I don't know if I buy the symbolism angle, but yeah in retrospect I guess it was a different set of emotions and a very different situation from the rest of the film so it needed to be shot very differently. Shooting a scene like that the same way they shot the gritty visceral scenes in the rest of the movie wouldn't have worked. It just threw me off a little still. |
|
I cried during this movie. I don't care. Pussies care what other people think, I cry when I want to and I don't give a shit. |

BEERS > REARS > QUEERS > FEARS > THE MIDDLE EAST > TEARS |

Amazing song. Roy Orbinson's "Crying" at the end of Gummo.
FTW! |

BEERS > REARS > QUEERS > FEARS > THE MIDDLE EAST > TEARS |
Fuck the Middle East. There's too many problems... |
|
I heard an interview with the director yesterday on NPR, he made it sound good. And i think Mickey Rourke is a great actor. |
|
mickey rourke is going to be at wrestlemania, chris jericho will most likely fight him. |

Big Wrestler Bump-n-Jam;
Yo what, went to see this awesome movie yesterday, and was really blown away. One thing particular to me is that I am very familiar with that New Jersey area by way of my wife's family and I loved how they worked it all in (the power lines and the train tracks, Bruce final track, Asbury Park boardwalk and Casino where the Stone Pony is right across the street). While that detracted from some here, this was awesome for me; I have run on that boardwalk many times.
But more importantly, I feel we got some huge metal props here. Like holy shit, was not BALLS TO THE WALL used perfectly here? Doesn't this song totally nail it as far as Randy's commitment to that fight? I did some head banging in the theater, my wife is used to it by now.
Just in case, here are the lyrics, check out how perfect they are to Randy's character.
Too many slaves in this world
Die by torture and pain
Too many people do not see
Theyre killing themselves - going insane
Too many people do not know
Bondage is over the human race
They believe slaves always lose
And this fear keeps them down
Watch the damned (God bless ya)
Theyre gonna break their chains (hey)
No, you cant stop them (God bless ya)
Theyre coming to get you
And then youll get your
Balls to the wall, man
Balls to the wall
Youll get your balls to the wall, man
Balls to the wall - balls to the wall
You may screw their brains
You may sacrifice them, too
You may mortify their flesh
You may rape them all
One day the tortured stand up
And revolt against the evil
They make you drink your blood
And tear yourself to pieces
You better watch the damned (God bless ya)
Theyre gonna break their chains (hey)
No, you cant stop them (God bless ya)
Theyre coming to get you
And then youll get your
Balls to the wall, man
Balls to the wall
Youll get your balls to the wall, man
Balls to the wall - balls to the wall
Come on man, lets stand up all over the world
Lets plug a bomb in everyones arse
If they dont keep us alive - were gonna fight for the right
Build a wall with the bodies of the dead - and youre saved
Make the world scared - come on, show me the sign of victory
Sign of victory - sign of victory
You better watch the damned (God bless ya)
Theyre gonna break their chains (hey)
No, you cant stop them (God bless ya)
Theyre coming to get you
And then youll get your
Balls to the wall, man
Balls to the wall
P.S. the only criticism I have is that he should have been named
Randy the SLAM, not Randy the Ram.
