Every biography of Black Sabbath has hammered home this point: Black Sabbath started up from the ashes of a blues band, and when they took the aesthetic direction they discovered, they found a voice for a thought that had been fermenting. They had seen the hippies take over rock with their remarkably gelatinous ideology, and now rebelled against that rebellion, by insisting people pay attention to the "heavy" -- reality, dude.
Metal has always been anti-hippie. You can't say you're pro-"peace" without being an idiot, because that's a method taken in absolute without regard for the situation. That's like blindly saying you're pro-"war" and thus executing emissaries of peace. It's confusing method with goal, tool with intent, instance with essence.
Metal is still anti-hippie. What made Metallica great in part was that they could sing about horrible death without moralizing it, at least until "One," when they submitted to the will of the crowd. Metal is pragmatic. Metal is realistic. Metal is masculine, and takes the attitude that no matter what some hippie crowd (and all crowds are hippies) think is right, you have to do what actually fixes the situation, not bloviate on about rights and peace until you bore your enemies to death.
As I see a new generation try to be retro-hippies, I'm proud to be metal. Fuck hippies. They had no ideas except that they wanted to neutralize others by being passive, and get away with a big party. But a party with idiots is worthless, and hippies left behing a trail of wreckage as they've now become conservative, selfish bankers. What a bunch of hypocrites. Metal hasn't been hypocritical -- it hates hippies.

I don't understand why you metalfags do it.
Listening to obscure shitty music (or should I say noise) does not make you cool. You aren't impressing anyone. Maybe you just get turned on when you hear twats grumble on the mic to the tune of their bandmates having seizures on guitars and rolling their faces around drumkits. An autistic child could make more intelligible music. At least mainstream music like 50 Cent has a beat so you can dance to it.
