Anyone know of any good, preferably free software I could download for making and editing MIDI files? I have to see it as a grid, not as staff

Garage Band (which you have) and Logic should do the trick. Or Reason 4. They can all be downloaded "for free", in a sense.
As for the real low quality MIDI stuff, I can't remember what I used to use way back in the day.
