New site? Maybe some day.
|
Im looking to find more experimental ambient and progressive bands. Anything with a real original sound. Instrumental is also a plus.
Im into jazz, hardcore, fusion, death metal, metal, ambient, progressive, im pretty open minded really so genre isnt as important. Bands like akercocke, king crimson, explosions in the sky, and intronaut, are a decent example of what im looking to find.
Thanks

The latest Ulver albums are good to start with. Also:
Mouth of The Architect (Progressive Metal with a lot of harsh vocals and edge)
The Ocean (Progressive Metal with a lot of harsh vocals and edge)
Jesu (Guitarist from Godflesh; his progressive/ambient project)
Pelican (Instrumental post-Metal)
Isis (Progressive Hardcore-ish)
Agalloch (Folk influenced)
Cult of Luna (Progressive Metal with a lot of ambiance)
Erik Mongrain (Tapping guitarist)
Om (Bass and drummer from Sleep)
Red Harvest (A little Industrial influenced)
Summoning (Black Metal influenced but very melodically progressive) |

i don't know if you like meshuggah at all, but thier guitar player Fredrik Thordendal has a solo album called: "Fredrik Thordendal's Sol Niger Within" it's a concept album. It is a masterpiece.
Have you heard "The Mahavishnu Orchestra"? They are like real trippy, real real real progressive rock-ish fusion stuff, they are great.
How about "Prelapse"? It's a band from japan with our very own John Zorn the Saxophone master guest appearing on their album. Its spastic, it covers pretty much every musical genre, and it does all that within pretty much every 2-5 minute song. One of the best albums ever. I swear by it.
While we are talking about John Zorn, i should mention his long time band "Naked City". Just like Prelapse they are really wierd, and seriously talented. Lots of fun. John Zorn was also in "Masada" which is him on Sax, a drummer, a bass player, and another horn. (I am not sure which kind of horn it is) but the dueling melodies they have in masada will make your back crawl. Its sick. |
|
Trumpet. Not a huge Masada fan, but that's a trumpet. |
|
and if you like anything i just mentioned, i would LOVE to share more music with ya. I have a bunch of it. |

Jesus, i posted this at lunch and now i have 100 bands to check out. Thats fucking awsome! Thanks everyone.
To: ouchdrummer, it sounds like you got a great taste in music. Thanks for the cool suggestions. I love mahavisnu, but havent heard any of the other stuff you mentioned. Im gonna get on all of this asap.
|
|
There's an abundance of post-rock being posted. Be weary of that. There are some good bands, but it gets old pretty quickly when you have a ton of it.
Same goes for all genres, I suppose. |

DISSOLVE. Ufomammut. Nick Cave / Birthday Party. Arkhon Infaustus. Portishead. Moss. Portal. Nick Drake. Woven Hand. Joy Division. Coil. ... and I just downloaded a CD called "Directions To See A Ghost" by The Black Angels... fucking rad. |
|
PAN-THY-MONIUM
KARABOUDJAN
OXIPLEGATZ
RENAISSANCE
DIABOLICAL MASQUERADE
FLEURETY
BETHZAIDA
and EDGE OF SANITY for good measure.
|
|
I agree with Goatcatalyst about almost everything he mentioned. Nick Cave and the Birthday party have some of the best romantic/phsycotic songs around. I saw Nick at the Orpheum in 2001 and it was moving. His album "No more shall we part" has some awesome minimalist drumming, and fantastic string parts performed by "The dirty three". (they sat in for the whole album, the dimension they add to the bad seeds really puts them over the top) |
|
one of the most boring bands ever.
awesome stuff. |
|
People have already posted way too much shit, and it will take you a long time to give everything here a fair listen.
However, I can't help but add Ephel Duath as a recommendation. They're an Italian band that mixes programmed parts with live instruments/drumming. The music can go from brutal metal to fusion to techno-ish in seconds.
http://www.myspace.com/ephelduath
WARNING: the first couple songs on the myspace page are remixes and are pretty straight up techno/industrial stuff. Listen to the last few songs posted (Crystalline Whirl, New Disorder, and my favorite The Passage) |

one of the most boring bands ever. |
boring? are you sure you listened to them? because they are pretty fuckin chill, but not boring. i saw them recently at Brandeis... great mingling/beer drinking background music. |
|
i ordered the sigur ros dvd yesterday, cant wait for that shit to come in. heard that it has some sweet footage of icelandic landscape along with live footage. im sure if you like explosions in the sky you have heard of this band. i was just recommending the dvd which i heard was amazing. |
|
Those videos are off the first 2 Ephel Duath albums. |

Have you seen them in concert? no! let's see.. who might have seen them in concert... hm... oh wait, that's me! When I saw them murder by death smoked them and they were so boring that I think I left. then again, I've heard the new CD a bunch and I think that I could get into it. It's the sort of music that dudes make to get indie rock girls to clap and dance to. |
|
blah blah Minus the Bear blah blah |
Oh my goodness, I feel so FUCKING GAY FOR CLICKING THAT LINK!
What the faggot are you doing listening to this crap? Why would you recommend it to anyone? What next, are you going to go play bass for some queer as hell indie band? Oh, wait... |

I don't really know Minus, but i think i heard that a member or two from Botch are in the band. Is that true? Cause Botch was awesome. |
|
Basically BOTCH was one of those bands where the four together were fucking amazing, but on their own they are all queer. The singer is in a country band, and I guess this is the guitarists new thing.
This makes me go from praying for a reunion to praying for them to die. This is worse than leaving Shai Hulud to play guitar in a girlie pop punk band. |
|
Tell me that someone didnt leave shai hulud to be in a girlie pop punk band... i hope your kidding. I havn't been into shai hulud since that album with all the teeth on the cd ('97ish?) but still i dont want them to play pop punk.. thats like an ex girlfriend you dont really talk to, but still respect, becoming a hooker. It's just not cool. |
|
well the vocalist left to join new found glory, but that was around the time you were listening to them. Im pretty sure thats what he was referencing.
Yea theres way too much stuff on here. But im pretty excited to get into it. Im hoping most of these bands have decent record deals so i can try to pick up used cds on amazon. |
|
Oh...anyone on here into dredg?? Thats a decent experimental rock band. The newer cd is more rock but the one before that was great. |
|

i got to see Sigur Ros here in Iceland in a room of maybe 60 or 70 other people. FUCKING RIGHTEOUS |
|
hmm.. i had no idea he went to new found glory... strange... |
|
If you truly want to get blown away, check out guitarist Bill Frisell. Probably the most unique tone and not choice I have ever encountered in a guitar player. He played in Naked City with Zorn.
His best cd by far is with upright bass player Dave Holland, and late drummer giant Elvin Jones. The album reminds me of being lost in a post-apocalyptic desert. |

The singer left Shai to be the guitarist of New Found Glory. This is the original singer, not the kid on That Within Blood Ill-Tempered. The kid on That Within Blood Ill-Tempered went on to do something far gayer: http://www.myspace.com/theblackatlantic |

Haha, I read that wrong at first and was all BILL FRISELL IS IN BRUTAL #2?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! |

i listen to ALL sorts of shit. they have a lot of awesome shit on their various EP's and LP's... a lot of awesome tapping guitar lines and a pretty decent rhythm section. i cant say that i care a whole lot for their vocal arrangements, but sometimes they get it right and it sounds great. its cool though, you can like what you want... its not like i linked up AFI or anything gay like that. i WILL say that you should listen to more than 30 seconds of the first song on their myspace. a lot of the material they have, thats not on the myspace, is chock full of instrumental goodness. Isis/Irepress/Mogwai like stuff. seriously.
also rev, you quoted my post that said i saw them live, hahaha noob.
i also have a strong feeling that their name makes up 80% of your opinion of them. i think its kind of a gay name as well. oh well...

Haha. Yeah we did a gig at Sculler's... He said it's not really what he's looking for right now musically. What a dick. |
|
Also, for anyone thats a fan of Empyrium... one of the dudes from them is in a band now called Sidewaytown... kind of a lame name, but wicked chill shit. http://www.myspace.com/sidewaytown its like a "dreamy/shoe-gaze" sound, sort of like Sigur Ros, but not quite as icelandic |
|
friswell is the balls. you ever check out Allen Holdsworth? If you listen to him, then listen to any meshuggah/fredrik thordendal solo you will realize that fredrik is pretty much trying to be allen holdsworth.. and that's ok. cause they both fucking rock in a way no one else does. |
|
ALSO i forgot to mention Tortoise in my original post. |
|
|
i also have a strong feeling that their name makes up 80% of your opinion of them
|
No, clicking the link and listening to a couple songs makes up 100% of my opinion of them. I'm not closed minded, I just know the difference between "awesome" and "fucking gay".
And for the record, any old AFI record will absolutely rock the SHIT out of minus the herd. It's just their newer few that sucked. |
