The most frequent Y-haplogroups were found to be E1a for African Americans and R1b for U.S. Caucasians. The percentage of admixture of Caucasian Y-haplogroups in the African American samples was slightly more than 30%. Frequency of African markers in the Caucasian samples was less than 5%.

Slavery, an ongoing travesty. I find it awesome they can track DNA like this. What's even scarier is that they find heritage mixes without using DNA:

"I've seen thousands of skulls. I know what a typical black male and
a typical American Indian male and a typical Caucasoid male looks
like. And females. The way I work it only takes three or four minutes
of looking at the skull. The way I use this program, I go ahead and
take the measurements and put them in here. And if the computer and I
agree, then I'm home free."

When the numbers are all in, he clicks "process" and the program
checks his measurements against several hundred skulls -- many less
than Snow has analyzed himself -- in a database managed by forensic
anthropologists at the University of Tennessee.

The results come back in seconds. "American Indian male. And it's 86
percent positive."

There are other possibilities: will we be able to tell by head size and cranial displacement caste at some point? Could we use this technology to re-unite African-Americans with long-displaced African families, and partially undo the horrors of slavery?

genome was mapped in 2000, Francis Collins, the head of the publicly
funded project, together with his privately funded rival, announced
that humans were 99.9 percent the same at the level of their genome.
That same year, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) began a
research program on pharmacogenetics that would exploit the .01
percent of human genetic difference, increasingly understood in
racial terms, to advance the field of pharmacy. First, this article
addresses Collins' summary of what he called the \'vigorous debate' on
the relationship between race and genetics in the open-access special
issue of Nature Genetics entitled \'Genetics for the Human Race' in
2004. Second, it examines the most vexed (if not always openly
stated) issue at stake in the debate: that many geneticists today
work with the assumption that human biology differs by race as it is
conceived through American census categories. It then presents
interviews with researchers in two collaborating US laboratories who
collect and organize DNA by American notions of \'race/ethnicity' and
assume that US race categories of classification largely traduce
human biogenetic difference. It concludes that race is a practical
and conceptual tool whose utility and function is often taken for
granted rather than rigorously assessed and that \'rational medicine'
cannot precede a rational approach to addressing the nature of racial
disparities, difference and inequality in health and society more
broadly.

It seems to me that most of us anti-racists (all of you reading this are anti-racists, or you can fuck off forever) try to deny that race exists as a means to destroy racism. It seems to me however that scientific knowledge is very clear on this topic: race exists, with some overlap from interbreeding. For this reason, we should probably attack racism itself on the basis of its moral wrongness, instead of trying to argue that race doesn't exist and therefore racism is scientifically illogical. It's not unscientific, it's just illogical, immoral, sadistic, pejorative, supercilious and so on.
