I was in the process of backing things up from it.. like all my RTTP shows and a ton of other things.
almost nothing copied off of it and then it started to smoke! the worst thing is that the other drive that I could have replaced the burnt up part from... well.. I just sent it in to get replaced last week! arg! I hope they send back the same exact drive back to me.

ok, the controller board for my new maxtor fits perfectly.. slightly different part number, but the drives are identical. think it'll work?

toggletoggle post by handinjury at Nov 10,2007 1:49pm
Tis the season for dieing hard drives. My laptop's harddrive is done. Which kinda sucks because I spent 3 months configuring the laptop for mobile audio use. Ironically the church gig was the last time I really used it. I guess once I got the lords chants on my hard drive it killed it.
My internet pc is acting like whore, Its either the hard drive or the power supply. The power supply is only 1.5yrs old, so I am leaning towards the hard drive.

Brian, can you record tonights show?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 10,2007 2:02pm
I've had sooo many hard drives die on me you would think I would be used to it by now.

I need to back up even more aggressively I guess... just need to get this friggin data off.

toggletoggle post by Uh at Nov 10,2007 4:57pm
raid dat shit, nigga

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 10,2007 4:58pm
USB RAIDs are $$$

toggletoggle post by Dertoxianli at Nov 10,2007 5:29pm
seagate has drive recovery services. a 500GB would be in the $1500 range though.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 10,2007 5:37pm
gay. I just sent them a drive that died a few months ago too. I'm going to try to swap the controller board with the other drive I found. if that works, I will copy everything off of it and then wipe and RMA the drive.

toggletoggle post by Uh at Nov 11,2007 1:21pm
no sata raid? what are you? 1994 or something?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 11,2007 1:30pm
I don't know how I would hook a SATA RAID up to a laptop without a pc express card.
BTW: SATA was invented in 2003

toggletoggle post by Uh at Nov 11,2007 1:48pm
Man.... you're playin' around with TB's of data with a laptop? I thought you'd have some mean server or something. I wanna get a big box and fill it with hdds and get a gbit lan going w/ redundant epenis installed.

the_reverend said:

Okay. That confirms that we didn't have SATA in 1994.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 11,2007 2:09pm
these tb's are just storage. I don't want to put them in a machine cause then I would leave them on 24-7 when I don't access these except to dump data on them once or twice a week.

toggletoggle post by NIGGER  at Nov 11,2007 6:48pm
BURNT DRIVE = NOW IT'S BLACK

IMPROVEMENT

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 11,2007 9:00pm
I swapped the controller board with another drive and I'm backing it up right now. once it's done, I'll try to low level format it and then send it back to seagate. drive #2 this month that I've had to send back to them.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 11,2007 9:00pm
I'm thinking of making a USB RAID solution.

toggletoggle post by Dertoxianli at Nov 11,2007 10:08pm
dont go usb. i'm pretty sure you can get eSATA cards for laptops. 3GB/s >>>>>>> 25MB/s

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 11,2007 10:14pm
eSATA are pc express. I don't have pc express.

well the Drobo is pretty new. They're going to be coming out with one that has networking soon. I'm sure the price will drop and you'll be able to find a drobo bundled with the drives for about that price.

The beauty of drobo is you don't have to worry about setting up raid at all and you still have full data security. You could pull a drive right out while it's running and it would replicate that data onto another drive in the background and you wouldnt lose access to any of your data while this goes on.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 12,2007 1:13am
yeah, that rules. I just got all my data off that drive that burnt.
now I can RMA it tomorrow.
cunts.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 12,2007 1:13am
I think it's warranty lasts until 2011.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Nov 12,2007 1:37am
i need to back up some stuff my new wd drive is hot to the touch... all my maxtor drives run cool

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Nov 12,2007 1:50am
wtf that drobo is kinda a waste of money.... i mean u can do that with raid and shit its way cheaper than 500 billz. plus it comes with no space!

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Nov 12,2007 1:51am
and it says mucking around with raid???? on os x u can just click software raid on drives... wtf?

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Nov 12,2007 1:53am
although im sure having a controller would be better

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 12,2007 7:42am
you can do software raid in windows too... DON'T DO IT. you will only be able to view them on that computer in the same orde/setup. I had a huge issue when I switched up computers.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 12,2007 7:56am
oh and what are you comparing your hd temp to?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 12,2007 9:47am
FU seagate, my original 500GB that I have a delivered tracking number for they are claiming that they didn't get!

I just bought this motherhumper to put my photos on

Iomega 1.5TB eSATA and USB 2.0 UltraMax Pro External Hard Drive - RAID
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5169...mega_33744_1_5TB_eSATA_and_USB.html

toggletoggle post by porphyria at Nov 12,2007 9:53am
hopefully it doesn't suck, I haven't purchased anything from Iomega since the Zip100 days.

tom: One year warranty

no thank you. I always get 3-5 year warranties.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 12,2007 10:08am
HA! someone from work just came up to me talking about hard drives and the first words out of his mouth "I looked at all the drives and western digital mybooks and iomegas sucked so I got maxtors"

I know, but it's the only external raid drive I found that had eSATA and the amount of space I was looking for.

I've never had a drive die on me so hopefully the good luck continues. I have an 80gb maxtor from 2001 which is always spinning that still works great. Even if it does die, all my stuff will be raid 1.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 12,2007 10:21am
I've had sooooo many drives die on me now. so so so so many. I need to buy 2 more 500's. $200 verse $1500 recovery cost. it's a no brainer.

I wish that 1TB hard drives would come down in price.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148278
granted, I spent that much for an 8GB in the 90's.

toggletoggle post by porphyria at Nov 12,2007 10:23am
btw, a lot of the maxtor and wd high capacity external drives are 1-year warranty as well.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 12,2007 11:13am
funny, that 1TB I just linked says
Pros: Enormous drive, very quiet, low heat, 5 Yr Warranty. Professional version, not WD gamer kind !

put that in an external case and bang, 5 year warranty.

toggletoggle post by porphyria at Nov 12,2007 11:22am
yeah, it's one seagate drive, internal.

I was just pointing out that the external WD's and Maxtors are 1 year warranty as well.... probably because they think people are going to be moving them all over the place.

yeah but with raid you're limited to how many drives, type, and size depending on what raid flavor you go with. With drobo you can pop in any drive of any size and it will work. All the data security is done by the drobo software. I know that a friend of mine has one of the earlier drobo's. He had a drive that was on it's last legs. It kept crashing and telling him the drive was unformatted and then after a restart it would work again. So he knew it was ready to die. It was a 60GB. He popped it in the drobo with a 160 and in about an hour all his data was backed up to the other drive and he could pull out the 60GB and toss it.

I don't know how reliable it is, but Fabrik just started a $5/mo unlimited backup service:

http://www.fabrik.com/company/media-room/press-releases/9.php

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 14,2007 10:23am
$5.mo is amazing. I might seriously look into that.

DYA: those look like SCSI, not IDE or SATA

came in last week, all my photos are on it (Raid 1) and it's running nicely.

I just got drive #1 back (drive #2 is coming on the 5th). I sent in a 7200.1 or 7200.9 drive and got back a 7200.10 drive!
