Does one NEED to use itunes with an ipod, or can I just rip mp3 files onto it straight from my harddrive? I have no intention of ever buying music through ITunes.

You can replace the iPod's firmware with open source Rockbox and just drag and drop your music to the iPod without having to use faggot iTunes.

Rockbox also allows you to play Doom and emulate Gameboy games on the iPod
