New site? Maybe some day.
So I'm at a music store playing around with a used ESP kiko lureiro sig that I'm very serriously considering buying.
I'm dicking around with some riffage and whatever and one of the old dudes that works there walks up to me and without saying a word picks the guitar up off my lap and switches it with a fucking Gibson les paul. and sais 'You need to be playing a MAN's guitar, son' or something along those lines.
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?
ARRRGGG so mad. |
Whats wrong with Gibs?
If you can play well on a Gibson, you can play on anything.
Yeah, no thanks. Never played a Gibson I liked that wasn't a thunderbird. No, scratch that - the Nikki Sixx bass actually played pretty nicely. |
it's a dick move, but I see nothing wrong with Les Pauls. |
I love Les Pauls...I just hate how heavy they are. |
definitely too heavy... not sound wise but weight wise |
i disappreciate not having the $$ to purchase a gibson les paul |
My guitarist switched to a Les Paul a few months back. It sounds pretty gross, and gives him some better tone of the single note stuff.
You still should have stuffed that guitar up that guy's ass. |

Regardless of whether you like Gibsons or not, the proper response to the action of that "old dude" would be to say nothing and punch him as hard as possible in the throat. If his falling and gasping did not satisfy you, then I would recommend beating him with said guitar. What a fucking blow-hard, that's a douche maneuver. |

Basically what I was going to say in this thread.
I love my SG though, sounds great. |
My LP doesnt weigh too much... plus you get used to it after a little while. |
hmm that was odd for someone to do, hey should of been like "hey i think this guitar will suit you better" then give it too you, but hey maybe it was his way of saying you deserve to be playing a $3000+ guitar. |
that is a slick looking esp. |
scalloped fretboard from 12 on... |
hahaha, what a dick. if someone tried to take a guitar out of my hands, there would be bloodshed. |
I was looking on the japanese esp site and some of the artists over there have some over the top guitars. |

I don't have that model, but my ESP has a similar finish except with bound edges. |
Gibson LP's are way too expensive. Fuck that. |

yea, those mh400s look nice. I've owned a few of them.
I can not wait to own the lureiro sig though. japanese made, 27 frets, 12+ fret scallop, original floyd, flamed maple top (and not just a veneer).. yumm
I will be putting EMGs in it though.
and I have HUGE issues with gibson as a company and as a guitar. I would play a fucking hondo or jay turser before I'd ever play a gibson. |
Seriously, if you get down to brass tacs you really shouldn't need a guitar with thin ergonomic neck, light weight body and scalloped fretboards to shred.
If you can't hit the notes with a 50 year old acoustic strung with piano wires and 1/4 inch action to boot....
....You should put down the guitar and pick up sewing. |
although it was a dick move, i respect the salesman's sentiments.
also, if Wata from Boris can handle an LP, anyone can.

thank you |
I have no problem 'handling' a les paul, but in my opinion they are uncomfortale, built poorly, sound disgusting, insanely over priced, and hideous looking.
If I pic up a 2000$ dollar sig in a store and tell him I'm considering buying it, he better not rip it out of my fucking hands because it's his paycheck for the next 4 weeks, and he DAMN sure better not switch it with a gibson that is the polar opposite to what I was originally playing in ever single imaginable way. Who the fuck does this guy think I am? |
You need a man's guitar sonny boy!
And for the fucking record, you haven't played a "man's guitar" until you've owned a Moser Custom Shop.
DestroyYouAlot understands. |

Say what you want, but I know guitars as well or better then anyone here. |

when i first read this i thought you said ESP Eclipse which is basically a Les Paul.
So that may have made sense, but that wasn't the case and that guy did the wrong thing.
What does Scalloped frets mean? Is it that they are slightly worn down and easier to play. |
guess that ends the thread |
fret scallops:
They're not any easier or harder to play on, but you can do some nifty vibrato tricks with them. |
Les Pauls and Gibsons have a different feel than any other guitar. It's a love it or hate it type thing. |
it's not just the feel I have a problem with:
set pocketowned |
Niccolai knows his shit, and has great taste in guitars. I like Les Pauls, but they're not for everybody, and the "man's guitar" thing is fucking stupid. |
I don't what that crap is at the top but it ain't an LP man. Maybe a low end model like Epiphone or something. |
I'd get a lower budget look-a-like and put in higher end bridge pickup and save a boat load of money than forking it all out on an official Gibson LP. |
Les Pauls have fucking horrid upper fret access. And the Kiko has fuckin' 27 frets.
I'm 100% with Niccolai on this. Total dick move on that guy's part. If you can get that guitar ANYWHERE else, then do it. And Moser Customs rule, I wish I could afford all this shit.
Where is this place, so I can pick up a Les Paul, play it for a bit, and ask the sales guy if he has a man's guitar around? |
The bottom would be a 59'paul and the top would be a 59 reissue = )
gibson used to have this picture on their website. Guess why they took it down?
rounding off the set and cutting the butt short on a plank will let you sortof 'rock' the neck blank back and forth so you can find the proper neck angle with the corresponding bridge (top picture). It works well in theory for finding the angle and it's cheaper and easier then just cutting the plan to the right angle, but I'd like to know how the hell neck-to-body resonance get's praised on a joint like that.
Also, you can easilly tell it's not an epiphone or a cheap model because it has a full maple top (not a veneer like epiphones) and it's fully quilted.
So yea, it's no secret that Gibson QC is down the toilet lately... but I guess they DO haveto fill every wall of every guitar center in America with their products, so they need more economical construction methods. |

I wish i could get the guitar elsewhere, but it's not available in America and paying to have it imported is expensive (and dealers aren't allowed to, so it's hard to find one).
Moser Custom Shops are the best made guitars I've ever played in my life.
and the place is called "sam's music" in new york. someone traded the guitar in used there, I got wind of it, and had to arrange a ride all the way there.
They only want $900 for this guitar. They clearly don't know what it is. |
They're having a sale on pansy guitars apparently. |

Funny thing is? The ONLY two 6-string Gibson-esque guitars I've ever gotten my hands on, and liked?
Were Jay Tursers. Not even kidding. One was SG copy, this thing had a nice thin neck (for an SG) and great action. The pickups weren't anything to write home about, but that's an easy fix. I still wish I'd bought it. The other was a double-cutout hollowbody, not at all appropriate for metal, but sounded fucking great for punk and rockabilly stuff, with less feedback when distorted than any other hollowbody I've played like that. Stolen, I wish I still had it.
I can respect someone liking the tone of a LP, but I'm just not into fighting with a guitar. I want something that lets me do what I want to do with as little effort as possible, hence my ESP/LTD fanboyism.
Oh, and one more thing:
LOL, wut?
WHERE THE FUCK DID YOU FIND A KIKO SIGNATURE? |
I'm not telling you unless I know you don't have the money to buy it, haha |
Fuck Les Pauls, I dont care for them. I turned a 80's guitar player that loved his Les Pauls over to Ibanez, know he has 6 Ibanez's. |
this is a man's guitar |

That thing probably looks, plays, and sounds better then any actual gibson. |
Now there's a man's cake.
*tosses down scone in disgust* |
If I put my pc resolution at 300x600 that cake takes up almost the whole screen...
Now THAT'S a MAN'S resolution. |

are you kidding? i just bought a VHT. i aint got shit for money.
but you should buy my crate cab, its sitting in my apartment wanting a good home. |
I need to buy that cab and this guitar. Sad thing is I only have 300$ in my bank account now and no job =(
Hopefully I can afford to put the guitar on layaway and sell my MH1000 for a good chunk of what it will cost.
I haveto buy a tremol-no for it as well. |
or you could just learn to use a floyd and have a new tool at your disposal.
and buy my cab. |

Fucking love Mosers. Anyway dont hate on the Les Paul hate on the dude that was fucking with you. I dont know my Les Paul is the best guitar I've ever owned. Its sturdy as hell, sounds like a truck and plays like a dream. I really like the ESP stuff too so I guess its just a matter of taste.
$900 for a Kiko, fucking ridiculous. Oh, if only I weren't dirt fucking broke. |
Is that Moser Koa-Walnut-Quilt Maple-Walnut-Koa???
Sick! |
i love my '79 custom.
i'm a weirdo though. i can't play on any guitar built for "shredding"
only on a boat of a les paul.
i agree though. gibson these days is like the harley davidson of guitars.
oh and any fucking clerk that pulls that shit should be fired on the fucking spot. |
I love me some Gibsons, but they're made poorly these days. Interesting photos of the neck joint. Their fret work is mighty spotty now too. |

Ironic, because I'm pretty sure that your '79 is from a period where gibson was making some of the poorest guitars they ever made. Don't feel bad though, because I love my '76 leftie gold-top deluxe, which is DEFINITELY from the period where gibson made the worst guitars they ever made.

Matt's guitar is sick. Which one's the 79? The black beauty or the cherryburst? I think the black one is still at Phil's house by the way.

Anthny said:
I wouldn't argue, as I said I love my own guitar from the same period. However, it's widely known that that particular stretch of years (latter 70's) Gibson (actually Norlin at the time) moved their factory and were making the lowest quality guitars of their 50+ year history. Now think, If I love playing my '76 so much, and it's arguably one of the more crappy guitars Gibson built, what does that say about the higher quality instruments they made before and after it?
niccoli, that wasnt a les paul he gave you, that was a cock.
dont pretend. |
Who's pretending? Gibson Les Paul is how we say cock where I'm from. |
I've had an Epiphone Les Paul for about 9 years now and despite some minor electronic stuff that just needed to be soldered and replacing the pickups to taste, the thing has had zero problems. I don't know, I love the thing. One of the most unique sounding guitars on the market. |
