can you fix a dead hard drive?

any suggestions?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 28,2006 9:58am
yes, please enlighten me when you have a hard drive that spins up and then the arm clicks a bunch and it shuts off on how to fix it.

toggletoggle post by KillerKadoogan   at Nov 28,2006 10:00am
If by fix you mean fuck and by hard drive you mean toddler...

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Nov 28,2006 10:19am
I wouldn't know anything more than Aaron would know. If you really need the data you can send it to a recovery specialist. That would probably be pricey, though. How about the freezer trick? haha. I tried it once.. didn't work for me.

And if you fuck a toddler, just make sure you don't crack the hip. It's a very unsettling noise.

aaron's looking for a recovery specialist but then everyone would see our p0rn videos and we'd be all over the net...

ps: he didn't keep it in the freezer for long

My work has used these people before. I'm not sure what they charged...

I tried the freezer thing and it didn't work. carina keeps telling me that I kept my hard drive in for a long time.. even though that doesn't matter. the average time to get a HD to work with the freezer trick is 1hr.

it's worked with 2 drives for me, but isn't working with carina.

carina, a qualified HDS isn't going to do anythign with the data, but return it.

my friend's father in law works at a recovery place..she's trying to find out how much it wil lbe...

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 28,2006 10:55am
that's probably going to get your the best deal.. every "reliable" place I'm looking at is $400-$800

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 28,2006 10:57am
just got another quote... $995

toggletoggle post by dftg at Nov 28,2006 11:13am
shit that's pricey...a new drive costs only 1/4 that amount

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 28,2006 11:14am
1/9th but will the new drive come with all her data on it? o.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 28,2006 11:29am
from another place:
Your estimated cost is $900

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Nov 28,2006 11:31am
damn...i'm still in denial over this

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 28,2006 11:32am
"If your drive was clicking DO NOT turn it back on. The more that
drive spins the more damage it is doing to the media."

likely the head(s) of you drive have cracked. It is important at this point
to keep in mind that there may be only one chance to recover data from this

WHAT?!? damn, from where?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 28,2006 12:27pm
also, we are talking laptop drives

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Nov 28,2006 2:32pm
ok got a quote...i'm going to bring in my laptop tomorrow and he's gonna try and get it done by friday...
$20 if it's easy or $40 if it's hard...he also asked if i could give him any recovery disks that came with it...

i made sure and said not repair bcz aaron knew how to do that..but recovery and i was assured that's what it was...it pays to have connections i guess

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 28,2006 2:37pm
there are no recovery cds.. all he's got to do is get the data off the drive and put it on something else... carina.. maybe you can clear off a 200GB to give to him to trasfer the data too? from what you typed it seems like they don't know what's up with the hard drive and aren't going to be able to get any farther than I did. but what do I know right? the hard drive itself is probably going to have to be taken apart and the hard drive heads replaced... this takes a lot more work than $40...

did you tell them that the actually heads on the hard drive make clicking sounds and then park themselves?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 28,2006 2:38pm
especially cause they asked for the recovery disks.. when that's not what they need at all.. they need to get the hard drive working and then put it in a hard drive cloner.

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Nov 28,2006 2:52pm
i explained it like you said and she's convinced he can do it

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 28,2006 3:07pm
so through a 3-person telephone being me to you to her to him and she thinks he can do it? did you and her talk about "thingies" and "doodads"?
but I hope he can do it too.

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Nov 28,2006 3:12pm
Just make sure you guys aren't out $40 when the person realized that the hard drive is broken.

toggletoggle post by watchmaker666 nli at Nov 28,2006 3:53pm
Yeah sounds to me like they are just gonna try to reload XP on your laptop, Fuck I would even charge 50$ for just that. If I got a price to put a roof on my house and 3 guys wanted to charge me 1000$ and one guy said he would do it for 50$ I would think twice about hiring that guy because your gonna get screwed, guaranteed

toggletoggle post by Dertoxia-nli at Nov 28,2006 4:58pm
drop it off at the federal computer crime lab saying it contains valuable terrorist info. then devise a plan to covertly sneak in and grab the info once they recover it.

if he can't fix it i won't pay anything. she's a nice girl who works with me and she's confinced her father in law can fix it

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Dec 5,2006 8:18am
he can't fix it
it's not the head, it's the bearings. It needs to be taken into a static free, blah blah blah free room in order to recover it and he doesn't have that :(

Somebody explain this freezer trick to me.

I've got this god awful Compaq waste of space desktop that I used in college. It's got all my document files on it and I need some of them right away. I haven't touched the thing in like a year and a half. I went to fire it up last week. It booted but it wouldn't load windows. I was able to get to the command prompt but whenever I tried to run a program it would tell me it couldn't read the C drive. Any thoughts?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Dec 5,2006 9:38am
the drive-freezer thing is that you put the hard drive in the freezer and it works for a little while.

You could try installing the hard drive as a secondary drive in another computer. Maybe there's a slim chance that the drive itself is not broken but another component of the computer is.

What are the physics behind the freezer trick. I want to know how a lower temperature could possibly cure failing mechanical parts.

I should email this to the Mythbusters.

The only people I know of with that kind of equipment are the ones that charge you a lot of money :(

Did you guys get a quote from www.mdsdiskservice.com ? I was curious how expensive they were.

toggletoggle post by Mess at Dec 5,2006 11:57am
i don't think putting your batteries in the freezer to recharge them works either. think that's a hock of shit also.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Dec 5,2006 12:03pm
the batteries thing is a crock: http://ask.yahoo.com/20011219.html

the freezer trick's worked for me a couple times... I don't know why.

toggletoggle post by Niccolai   at Dec 5,2006 5:49pm
Are hard drives dying commonplace?

I was thinking about getting an 80 gig external for my music files, but is it a sure thing that it will eventually shit the bed?

I'm trying the freezer trick now at work again. My boss didn't believe me so I had him google it. We found some pretty funny picures.

ps: i thought it was a thread I had made about Dakota!!

I can't wait to watch that movie.

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Jan 22,2007 2:45pm
An hour in the deep freeze did nothing. I want to give it the 24hour freeze though. My boss said "fuck it, just chuck the whole laptop in the freezer". This thing is an old piece of shit anyway. I said I'd put it in the freezer as long as I could put a tag on it that says "do not eat".

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Jun 20,2007 9:25pm
Just tried this again on another hopeless drive from a computer I'm fixing for someone. Nada. I've tried this 4 times or so. It's never worked for me.

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Sep 17,2007 11:45am
Making it 5 times now. Will it work? I suspect not.
