I answered and it took me a while to find all the info.
so I figured I'd post it here too.
I do a lot of things...
I have a bunch of different "set ups" and I try to use them all from all angle during bands. Though time doesn't always allow for this.
d100
sb 80dx
17-35mm sigma
28-70mm f2.8 sigma (for the no-flash venues)
my basic set ups:
1) iso 200, 1/60s f5 + flash program WB=flash
direct usually sucks (lost my diffuser dome) so I bounce the flah off the ceiling, guitar cabs, monitors, whatever.
2) same as above, but 1/2-1/10sec shutter f 5.6 manual WB=flash
I usually twist the camera to get some cooler effects
2.5) same as above with close subjust so they are clear and the background it abstract
3) same, but 1s f7.1-11 manual WB=flash
this is such a mess... it only works sometimes. I usually put my flash to strobe 2x at 2khz m 1/8th.
I learned this from looking at the converge DVD pictures and figuring out what he must do to get it to work.
also, with strobe, you can zoom in/out and it looks pretty awesome
4) ISO 1600/1000 30s shtter priority WB=auto/incan/tung
I use this for available lighting situations.
due to the colored bulbs and 30s shutter I adjust my WB to cut out a lot of the reds.
5) same as above, but WB= auto/flash and flash -3.0
and I bounce the flash off ANYTHING just a little boost to fill in the picture.
these usually come up so grainy though.
6) using a hot shoe cable sc-18
another great aid.
I can use to to shoot someone jumping and the lighting coming up form under them. I love doing that.
or I set it on a speaker/cab and move x feet away and get better lighting.
7) just mess around with the settings and getsomething cool while playing with the shutter speeds
