New site? Maybe some day.
my friends and I are trying to come up with some classic thrash bands from 1986-1994. can ya list some? Looking for some obscure ones.
An example how about this band Confessor? Back in 1991 they put out a killer album that was technical and weird. Can't find it anymore but i see they are back together and released something new? anyone have it? |
oh and anyone remember that NJ band Blood Feast? Chopping Block Blues! |
Gotta check out Razor (from Canada), and oh,shit, I could go on for days being the old geezer I am...I'll be selling a lot of classic and obscure hardcore and thrash metal from the 80's on cassette soon. I'll post when the sale is organized. Hell, I used to play Blood Feast on my radio show!!! |
check out forbidden if you haven't heard them already; awesome thrash band |
yeah twisted into form, i have the old CD, haven't listened to it in at least 12 years. wow.
hey ichabod name some cool obscure thrash acts. i'm really into the stuff from the late 80's early 90's that no one gave a chance because the grunge scene took over. |
I can't account for this guy's tastes (or anyone who would give Artillery "By Inheritance" a mediocre score), but check out:
http://www.classicthrash.com
He has some reviews and notes about a whole bunch of obscure bands from the time period you are looking for.
You could also look through my music list, I write very short (and sometimes funny) blurbs for each CD, although you'll have to fish through to find the thrash stuff.
http://www.geocities.com/otterwaldi/music.html
Hope those help get you started, there are 100s of bands worth checking out that match the description you are looking for.
Two of the best thrash albums ever, both extremly technical and far beyond their time (and riffwise, ahead of our own time).
Deathrow - Deception Ignored (1989)
Artillery - By Inheritance (1990)
Some of my favorite metal ever. |
Whiplash
Sacrifice
Razor
Aggresion
Blood Feast
Cyclone Temple
Evildead
Blind Illusion (Les Claypool's first band)
Darkness |
Kreator
Exhorder
Tankard
Forbidden
Exodus
Defiance |
Rich LDR will love this thread.
VIO-LENCE!!!
RAZOR
DREAM DEATH
FAITH OR FEAR
NUCLEAR ASSAULT
awesome! thanks guys.
I hear a lot about TANKARD, what are they like?
Defiance Void Terra Ferma, yup use to own that CD and I actually didn't think they were that great.
I also had a tape back in the day by Assassin Interstellar something. I just remember they crushed. Also a band from Britain called Virus weren't bad, another tape I have. ANACRUSIS i wanted to like but never got into them...
Keep em coming and yeah someone has suggested Artillery's By Inheritance to me. Heard of them but never checked them out back then.
that classicthrash.com is a really cool page. pretty informative. |

Blood Feast kicked ass but that album bites the big one. |
to list the obvious...Anthrax, Sacred Reich, Exodus, (bonded by blood) Vio-lence |

why did chopping block bite? that was the only one i had i think and i remember lovin it. Lyrics sucked big time but musically the drumming was pretty cool... i may have had an older tape from one of their shows from back in the day but i'm sure its long gone...
Aggression The Full Treatment was a cool tape but I remember the recording wasn't as good. Canadian thrash!
For bands that haven't been listed yet
Death Strike (death/thrash with member of Master)
Exorcist (black metal style lyrics and vocals with thrash music)
Fastkill (Kreator styled)
Gammacide (fast thrash)
Mace ( Heavy metal/power metal/punk/ thrash)
Wehrmacht (Crossover)
Num Skull (black/death styled thrash)
Onslaught (black/death thrash)
Sadus (sorta Kreator styled)
That's all I can think of on the top of my head besides the ones that everybody knows. I have a bunch of other thrash cds but I don't feel like going through my whole collection right now. |

If that's the only one you heard then that kinda explains why you liked it. Listen to their first cd and their mini-cd. It's godly.

Exorcist is really amazing, especially because it's the guy from Virgin Steele who actually finished that record.
I'm not really a fan of Wehrmacht, they are a terrible band and Tankard are similar and far better musically. All the others Dissector listed are cool though.
sadus swallowed in black was a great one but they were more speedy metal than thrash i guess. ah its all the same!
Yes I had a Blood Feast tape that had like 4 songs on it i recall. I can't remember what it sounded like though. |

It was probably Face Fate then. That one shreds. |
and also some of the best thrash I've ever heard came from an old punk band, English Dogs. Check out:
English Dogs - Forward Into Battle
English Dogs - Where Legend Began
English Dogs - Metalmorphosis
They used to be a punk band then changed full out metal. Not even corssover hardcore metal stuff. |
DAMN, i bought that tape at a show they played at back in 1990 when i was in 9th grade! I no longer have it, but i do remember it only had 4 songs. Then I bought that Chopping Block Blues CD shortly after. maybe i'll try to search for that on P2P if possible. I know its been long OOP |
English dogs were one of the few punk bands to cross over successfully into metal. But even their punk is good. |
Oh shit!!! Wermacht! Tankard! Y'all ar ticklin' my nostalgia bones here! how about Jersey Dogs, Cryptic Slaughter, Piledriver, the Broken Bones crossover stuff (Bonecrusher, etc.), oh my god I'm gonna have to dust off the LP's...I sold a bunch of shirts from these bands on ebay and made a ton o' $ That's how I came to know the Abhorred fellas too, they listed Possessed as a favorite ( saw 'em with Dark Angel at the Paradise)...fucking brilliant. Love Thrash..."When Thrash is Dead You'll Be Gone"..truer words I never spoke. |

Oh shit!! Good one with fuckin Sadus!! Where was my head at? Steve Digeorgio is brilliant. Love those guys. Dissection is very thrash but they are tagged as black.
Dissection
Sadus
Overkill (another big duh)
Exhorder is by far the best (Then Pantera took their steam. But I still love Pantera.)
Some obscure ones I love are
Heathen
Toxik
Realm
Artillery (already mentioned, but I should add that their first two records are also great, as well as BACK from 97.) |
It's a crime that more people haven't heard Realm - Suiciety
What a killer record. |
Rigor Mortis
Atrophy
Demolition Hammer
Defiance
Dark Angel
Dead Horse
Yes, DEAD HORSE ruled!
Surprised that no one has mentioned WARGASM, (early) DEATH ANGEL or EXCITER yet.

Broken Bones and Cryptic Slaughter are fucking amazing. I figured they were too on the punk side to mention here but I'm glad somebody else did. |
Suicity is a great album, but Endless War is fucking amazing (by Realm). |
wow a lot of blasts from the pasts going on here, makes me cry, I AM OLD!!!! 1988-1992 was the high point for thrash. i mean when was the last time you went to a local thrash metal show??? 1992 for me before hardcore took over the scene in full force 1993. I've seen Blood Feast, Demolition Hammer, MOD, Overkill, Nuclear Assault a ton of times in CT back in 1990. They were considered "local" back then. Also got to see Dark Angel, Atrophy, Sadus, Death Angel, Dead Horse, Believer, Rigor Mortis, tankard, Exorder, and tons more roll through CT back then.
brings a tear to my eye. those were the good ol days |
WARGASM
MELIAH RAGE
NUCLEAR ASSAULT

I finally got We Have Arrived (DA) recently (!)
We Have Arrived is DARK ANGEL, not DEATH ANGEL.
KHOMAAAAANIAC!! YOUR HOLY WAR IS A TRAVESTYYYYYY! |
Hahaha yes Fleming, thou art producer-god. |
nice guys, i'm kinda trying to find this stuff on P2P but no luck. I see a lot of the stuff on ebay and I won a few auctions.
Dark Angel - Time does not heal for 99 cents + shipping. Can't beat that!
Artillery - By Inheritence for $8
Blood Feast - Face Fate for $10 and ya only get 4 songs but I'm very curious to hear what "they use to" sound like pre Chopping Block Blues
Tankard I honestly do not like. Aw well. I'm going to continue my quest for the past!!! |

which dead horse album? The one with "Rock Lobster"!? I can't remember what they sounded like. Wargasm wasn't a personal fave of mine...

Kill For Pleasure is the best Blood Feast album in my opinion but a lot of people say Face Fate. |
i know when i saw them play they played more songs from chopping block blues. i remember people telling me that chopping was a more polished tame blood feast and that their 1st album on LP! was more speed evil thrash metal. I just remember everyone complaining about the recording of that album and how much it sucked. |

Yeah it's way more polished. Their first LP was extreme as fuck. |
WARGASM - Why Play Around is really the only worthy CD, and yes, the DEAD HORSE - Peaceful Death And Pretty Flowers CD has the B-52's cover song on it.
wait, i just saw on Amazon the Artillery cd going for $65!? I just got one for $8. am i missing something here!?!?!?! |

hahaha. i should've been sleeping 2 hours before I wrote that..don't get all uppitty.

OMG...I could go on for days...you wanted obscure ones so I won't list the more popular ones, but some great obscure ones are:
EXUMER
RAZOR
PARADOX
TOXIK
LAAZ ROCKIT
ZOETROPE
HOBBS ANGEL OF DEATH
WRAITH
WRATH
IRON ANGEL
TANKARD
EXORCIST
S.D.I.
when i have more time i will list more!
what about CORONER from Sweeden? the tech thrash metal band of the late 80's early 90's???? |
CORONER are from Switzerland, the same as CELTIC FROST and SAMAEL.
Coroner, yeah swiss, rolex watches! they were a cool band and probably ahead of their time. Iron Angel wasn't that great. Acid Reign was decent british thrash but the vocals sucked. I'd suggest Obnoxious if you can ever find it. I have it on tape. Razor shotgun justice was a good one also but i doubt you'll ever find that, i got it on tape. Anacrusis first album is good minus the HORRIBLE vocals. |
oh Razor's song "United by Hatred" is a complete rip off of "Angel of Death". its kinda of funny |
Razor, go to "you tube" and you'll find a ton of old thrash metal videos from 1988 and stuff. Its kinda cool. Razor has a vid but its from their first album or something. really bad stuff.
Bathory wasn't very good either but to each his own.
Artillery was AWESOME!!!! The album By Inheritance is well worth the over price cost of say $40! I've seen that CD go for $60 on ebay! And people buy it!!! So if you got yours for $8 may I suggest you flip that shit and make some ched! |
oh and Toxik World Circus was a good tape also from back in the day! |
Speaking of the Limeys, how about Onslaught? Not-quite-thrash U.S. notables Obsession (Scarred for Life, Marshall Law, etc.) were pretty talented chaps too, saw 'em at Narcissus/Celebration in Boston. My favorite for creating an atmosphere is "The Return" by Bathory...so fucking menacing, even with the shitty production and horrible Rockman guitar sound. It's shittiness creates such an apocolyptic vibe. |
Onslaughts records were great, and so was Bathory "The Return". "Blood Fire Death" isn't so much a thrash record as a Viking metal/black metal prototype, but their first three albums were all out black thrash.
Toxik "World Circus" is great but I think they got even better on "Think This".
SPONTANEOUSSSSSSSSSSS |

You don't like Iron Angel but you mention Anacrusis and Acid Reign who both were subpar, even in comparison to Iron Angel...interesting...
Anacrusis got weaker on the later albums. I was never into Acid Reign, Iron Angel is pretty solid but certainly there were better thrash/speed bands coming out of Germany!
Anacrusis first album was good musically but the vocals were bad. Acid Reign was boring...'among the living' Anthrax ripp off band |
anyone like CEREBRAL FIX from back then? I thought they were pretty good. One album I remember wasn't good but there were two that thrashed! |
oh and i want to mention if anyone is trying to buy "classic oop" thrash CDs on ebay be warned because i guess some people selling have friends bidding on cds to get to jack the prices up way high. |

Think This is completely amazing. I love that CD so much.
Where did you get World Circus? I would kill for a copy but they're always so expensive. Also, where did you get Endless War? That's another one that's just too pricy for me to buy without feeling guilty. |
i have World Circuis on tape. Maybe I can digitize it and get it up on Limewire... |
yeah don't bid on World Circus because no one should pay more than $40 on a classic hard to find out of print CD! that happens on ebay all the time (where sellers have friends bid on the item to jack the price up) nothing new.
Cerebral Fix Bastards is the CD that is cool. Their first one was decent but Bastards and the one after that were the best. |
ROGUE MALE!!!!!!! "Crazy Motorcycle..." oh, and WARFARE!!! "Mayhem fucking Mayhem"..good ol' days indeed....> |

Every year at Umass some guy brought a ton of used CDs to the school fair. I remember one year he had tons of old Roadrunner/Roadracer stuff so I cleared him out and threw away my old cassette copies. About $50 for 13 CDs. Atrophy, Realm, Holy Terror, etc, "Endless War" was with those.
R/C records, man brings back mems. Atrophy was ok, I have both cds. Socialized hate and Violent by nature. I guess Atrophy gets blah at times, they tried to do the Ride the Lightning style with hints of 90's thrash.
Xentrix was the ultimate old school Metallica rip off band! |
and who can forget Devastation Idolatry! the band that bordered on death metal yet never crossed over the line. i use to have this cd but sold it a few years ago and got $4 for it. I see it on eBay
http://cgi.ebay.com/Idolatry-Devastation-C...ssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
for $50. what the fuck!!!!!!!!!! it was good but not that good!
Exhorder Slaughter in the Vatican was a very brutal thrash album. Especially the song "The Tragic Period"! we need a thrash show that features reunions! |
someone said it already Evildead "Annihilation of Civilization" good thrash from 1989!
Defiance "Beyond Recognition" ownes over "Void Terra Ferma" |
R/C records said: someone said it already Evildead "Annihilation of Civilization" good thrash from 1989!

I preferred "Void Terra Firma", but I actually preferred "Product of Society" to both the later albums.
Hmmmm, I honestly did not like Defiance at all. I mean they weren't horrible but there was something about that band that bothered me. I use to have Void Terra and Beyond. I thought Beyond was just ok and did not stand out for me. Actually that band Defiance did not stand out.
But yeah I do have Evildead on tape. I had all of their albums and I remember I loved them in high school. I have to look for my tape collection! Keep them comin guys! Awesome! |

yup have this CD Idolatry still. Rocks it! Boy maybe I should sell my copy for $50! wow!!!!!!!
my friend wanted me to add
INVOCATOR "WEAVE THE APOCALYPSE"
to the list of classic thrash. i think they were a good tech thrash almost death metal style band... |
yes Invocator Weave was the best one they put out.
if i may. do not buy out of print or rare thrash cds on eBay. There is a scam going on where groups of people are jacking the price up so that the real person that will do anything to get it pays a rediculus cost. Not saying all auctions are like this but I've been warned and I see it.
Check out:
http://shopping.theendrecords.com/
they have a lot of these cds at normal price. for example there was a link above for Devastation "Idolarty" for $50+shipping. If you go to The End Records they have 4 cds NEW left for a mere $11.50+shipping. I already ordered one and its on its way.
Another is Artillery. Yes this is long OOP but if you search you'll find some people selling it for $20. Not $100. Which is totally idiotic!!!
Just sayin if you are really into some of this stuff you should seek them out somewhere else other than scamBAY. |
I guess this would be a good time to remind you all about this amazing web site...
www.vibrationsofdoom.com
go to classic albums and listen, IN THEIR ENTIRETY, the underground of the underground from back in the day...the site is a godsend!! So much power metal and thrash I never really knew myself and that I am seeking on Ebay of all places... |
OR mp3sugar.com - you can "rent" the song for the day. and during that 24hrs you can save them... that's where i got Artillery tonight! |
mp3 sugar has Artillery for $0.89 for the whole album in 192kbps. not a bad deal. but i still got my used copy for $8 so... not $100! that is a scam! |
and what is the idea with the guy on eBay selling Devastation for $49 when you can order it for $12? am i missing something? does he have it wrong? |
You could get all three Devastation CDs for less than $49. |
Duh. I forgot yet another. SUICIDAL TENDENCIES!!!! |
ST! hahaha. The best CD of all time is How will I laugh! awesome! "Think somethin funny? Laugh at this!" that riff drove people crazy. Too bad today they don't draw anyone anymore.
Blood Feast Chopping Block is horrible. Slayer wannabe band and the vocals are horrible! Ok, Hunted Stalked and Slain is the only good song on that CD. They were really not a very good band.
Xentrix was horrible as well. Metalliclones!
Evildead Annialation is a classic. Black Flag cover song with the "Institutionalized" riff at the end, awesome! "Bend over here it comes again!" hahahahaha |
Hey Man,
I'm was the lead singer in TIPPER GORE from R.I. We used to play out with Candy Striper Death Orgy all the time.
I remember we played an awesome all-day show up with you guys up in New Hampshire with Nuclear Assault, Melaiah, Wargasm and a shit-load of other bands. Me and the bass player in Gore, John Labbe, got caught by the N.H. cops drinking Budweiser out of McDonald's "New Kids on the Block" novelty cups out on the boardwalk in front of the theater -- and they threw us in the drunk tank for a few hours. Our guitarist convinced the cops to let us out of the slammer just in time for the show. Strangely enough, we shredded that night. The true metalness of rushing from the jailhouse to the stage made for some serious aggressive energy.
Thanks for adding our humble band to your pantheon of classic thrash.
Horns up,
Todd "Todd Gore" Carey
TIPPERGORE (1988-1994) |
Just buy all the "Angels"... Dark Angel, Iron Angel, the first Death Angel (the ultra violence), the first Morbid Angel demo (abominations of desolation), etc. |
german metallica wannabe's VENDETTA Braindamage. incredible CD. Assorted Heap was good. There were so many bands from that 1988-1992 era before grunge pushed all that away. Cerebral Fix was H O R R I B L E! I don't even consider them thrash. They were an Obituary Clone Band. horrible stuff. waste of time! |
NUM SKULL remember them!!!!
mall metal sux, do any bands such as Trivium even know a single true thrash metal band from back in the day? i doubt it. |
numskull was not bad but the vocals were the downside. one of those bands where you wished the vocals were different cause the music was so good. accuser was a cool german band. Virus from UK was decent.
GAMMACIDE! AWESOME THRASH FROM TX. they were awesome and i think they just re-issued their only CD!!!! |
yo, fuck gammacide, not very good. what about old school ATTOMICA from Brazil or how about the more tame band DEATHWISH? those were some obscure bands form the olden days.
yeah solstice was cool |
currently some of my favorite albums:
heathen - breaking the silence
toxik - think this
watchtower - control and resistance
blind illusion - the sane asylum
annihilator - alice in hell |
