Its because some whiney greasy kids in Seatle decided to pick up a guitar with no prior musical knowledge and start playing shitty whiney greasy kid music. As soon as people discovered that you dont need musical talent to be in a top 40 band metal sank back to the underground.

I was about to post something about Nirvana too

I would blame
1) poison
2) winger
3) big hair

Poison still sells out Great Woods, so if they were too blame then they would have been the first to disapear.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Oct 6,2004 11:32am
no, they pull the big-hair out of the woodwork.
remember, most clubs have a strict no big hair policy.
much like o'briens no moustache policy.

and the chopping block's no metalcore policy? oh wait, thats my policy.

Underground metal was always underground. Mainstream metal was always popular. Poison and those bands got too gay so kids moved on to Soundgarden and Alice in Chains. Then they moved on to Korn and Limp Bizkit.
Its not like Dark Angel and Celtic Frost were wicked huge in the 80's.

don't leave out the fact that, when grunge threatened, and Nirvana's record was huge, the one band that could have fought back and ensured metal's (real metal, not hair-metal) survival: Metallica, put out the biggest sell-out record in history and nailed the coffin closed...

Celtic Frost were pretty big for awhile. Even before all that cold lake bullshit.

Because metal turned to complete shit

Metal never turned to complete shit. Good metal bands turned to complete shit. Metal rules and always will.

Huh? They lost all their fans with Cold Lake.
They were a club band, just like the bigger underground bands of today.

naw dude they played some pretty big shows. and yea they lost all their real fans with cold lake but thats what got em on MTV and shit like that.

I don't think playing the Channel = "wicked huge"
MTV did not = record sales for them

they played concert halls which is pretty decent in my book. and yea nobody bought cold lake anyways. either way i dont care. Celtic Frost is still better than 90% of "metal" bands out today.

I would blame Chris Holmes for his awful portrayal of a has been rock star.......he just looked like he was a fucking mess in that movie....as soon as "the masses" saw that metal was doomed. He just looked and acted like a fuck up.

chiris holmes acting like a dick is responsible for the decline in popularity of heavy metal?

yeah, if only he had stayed sober for that interview; Mastodon would be multi-millionaires, Musitaine would be President and Slipknot would have their own reality show.

anyway, 'the masses' didn't see that movie; only metalheads

Great topic...Grunge did not kill metal,,Metal killed itself ( or went into a coma) by trying to fit into the new temporary fad

...3rd knuckle is right,,MEtallica nailed the coffin closed...Then came two more nails Megadeth and Anthrax's watered down excuses for LP's.
I feel on reason METAL was popular in the 80's was due to Black Sabbath still being a fresh example of heavy music.
There is still hope,,Techno "metal" like NiN and Ministry ect.. is fading away...and Sabbath and Priest are still going strong.

An 80's question: I'm looking for the video for Bathory's "One Rode To Asa Bay" Soulseek and Kazaa have proved fruitless so far and I hate using limewire for anything. Does anyone know of sites that might host the video?
