When I first saw Prometheus on Friday night, I thought the same thing you wrote above. When my friend and I went back and saw it on Sunday, going into it after smoking this good pot, my outlook and thought process radically shifted, and I saw things in a more sinister light. It felt too obvious that he would be the messianic sacrifice. The engineers/space jockeys/call them what you will, seem to have an agenda we couldn't even begin to imagine. As seen in the film, they're very ruthless and cruel. There might be valid reasons for their general dispostions. My friend and both think that something else was going on in that scene.
