He is exceptionally good at bringing out the unique qualities in people and pushing them to move past their perceived limitations. Since I started lessons with him about 3 years ago, I've seen exponential growth in myself compared to previous years in multiple areas including theory, scale knowledge and usage (modes, whole-tone, diminished, etc), solo construction, motivic writing, etc. Most important though, is that he showed me ways to apply these things to my own writing style. With that said, I strongly suggest that anyone who has as much as a curiosity about where their playing can go, do yourself a favor and get lessons with Dave. You'll be glad you did. DO IT!
