Not to sound like a cynic, but if they were capable of intellect, they'd have developed it already.

On the other end, most "intellectuals" are effete and unrealistic and know little of practical solutions, preferring instead neurotic judgments "about" reality -- and this is from someone who enjoyed being an intellectual in academia.
