I think, at least in the movie, it was a subtle hint at marijuana, given the way they acted very giddy while discovering it and how they got when they smoked. Gandalf on the other hand, well, he'd smoke it while he was thinking. He was using his pipeweed to stimulate his introspective abilities. JRR Tolkien was an avid smoker of tobacco, but I always wondered if Peter Jackson and crew alluded to marijuana use in the movies.
