Standard recording contracts are designed to give the label ALL of the options; your friend will have NO control over the next 5 or so years of his career.
Also they will probably take your friend's merch money and also their publishing money, as labels make nothing from cd sales anymore. they used to try to hide this but now they just put it in the contract straight up. those used to be the only ways bands made any take-home money; now they take that too.
There's almost nothing that a label can do for you in this interweb age that you can't do yourself if you have half a brain and some serious drive.
