Theres a couple things it could also be. If your playing metal or sumthing heavy 5a is kinda thin maybe think about switching to 5b??

Also when you purchase your sticks do you check them out and make sure theres only one kind of wood? Somtimes when you see like darker spots where theres other wood it could chip or snap easier. Im sure there a more technical way of saying that but im stupid so yea..

Also zjd made a good point about your technique. When i started playing drums i broke alot of sticks and had alot of wood chips all over. The more i worked on rudiments and shit the less i smashed and broke sticks and cymbols.
