Actually Oread St is down a little further... about halfway between the spot you're thinking of and the PIP shelter. My ex's mom used to live in a really really nice apartment on that street. Problem was, it was on that street and there's a crack infested rooming house a few buildings down. Piedmont St isn't as bad as its rep. Back in the day maybe it was. I think the sign someone was talking about actually said some nasty things about prostitution and STDs and things like that (as if there could be any nice things to say about them). The reason it was taken down was because it was way out of line and supported false or misleading information about disease and poverty and blah, blah, blah- activists like myself finally got our way. You don't want to get me started on this topic though. I'll go on a tangent. Anyway, to make a point that's actually useful here, Beaver McD said: "My whole life growing up I was just told it (Piedmont St) was the worst street in all of Worcester". I would advise you NOT to walk down any of the streets that stretch from the corner of Main/Chandler/Madison and up as far as Moynihan's Pub after dark. I say this because I worked at the PIP for a few years and had to help patch up numerous people (mostly college freshman jocks) who got jumped / robbed / beaten because they were easy drunken targets. So yeah. Don't walk there. Unless you want to lose your wallet, shoes, cell phone, and possible spend the night bleeding in the gutter- or worse- in Med City!
